How many baseplates do I need?
Divide the mosaic’s width in studs by the baseplate’s width, do the same for the height, and multiply. A 64 × 64 mosaic on 32-stud plates is 2 × 2, four plates.
Plates for common mosaic sizes
Plates across × down. A dash means the size isn’t a whole number of those plates.
| Mosaic (studs) | 16 × 16 plates | 32 × 32 plates | 48 × 48 plates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32 × 32 | 4 (2 × 2) | 1 (1 × 1) | — |
| 48 × 64 | 12 (3 × 4) | — | — |
| 64 × 64 | 16 (4 × 4) | 4 (2 × 2) | — |
| 96 × 96 | 36 (6 × 6) | 9 (3 × 3) | 4 (2 × 2) |
| 128 × 96 | 48 (8 × 6) | 12 (4 × 3) | — |
| 192 × 192 | 144 (12 × 12) | 36 (6 × 6) | 16 (4 × 4) |
Make the width a whole number of plates
A mosaic 50 studs wide needs two 32-stud plates and leaves 14 studs of the second one bare, which is awkward to build and worse to display. Rounding to 64 fills both plates. BrickZoid snaps every width to whole baseplates for this reason. The height follows your crop, so crop to a whole number of plates tall as well.
Plates and pieces
Every stud is one 1×1 plate, so a 64 × 64 mosaic is 4,096 plates. BrickZoid counts them for you, colour by colour, alongside the baseplates.
